Heath Ledger's Death Was Accidental Overdose

Heath Ledger's death on Jan. 22 was due to an accidental mixture of prescription drugs, New York City's Chief Medical Examiner has concluded.

"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Diazepam, Temazepam, Alprazolam, and Doxylamine," said an announcement released Wednesday morning by office spokeswoman Ellen Borakove.

"We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications," the two-paragraph statement said in its entirety.

Oxycodone is a painkiller, Hydrocodone is also known as Vicodin, Diazepam is commonly called Valium, Temazepam treats anxiety or sleeplessness, Alprazolam is known as Xanax, and Doxylamine is a sedating antihistamine often used as a sleep aid.

Dr. Michael Hunter, a prominent forensic pathologist not involved in the Ledger matter, tells PEOPLE that the combination of the powerful drugs most likely caused "poly-drug intoxication" which led to respiratory arrest. "His breathing probably got slower and slower until it stopped all together," he said.

Hunter also said it is highly unlikely a doctor would have allowed Ledger to take all the different types of drugs in his system (though another doctor, Vatsal Thakkar, a psychiatrist at NYU Medical Center, tells PEOPLE that it could be "sloppy prescribing"). Either way, "This is a dangerous mixture of drugs," said Hunter. "We are seeing more and more people dying of poly-drug intoxication from prescription drugs and it usually a combination of the narcotic-type drugs seen here."

Hunter said it's important to note that the Medical Examiner officially ruled the death an accident, which means they must have ruled out suicide. He also said they officially determined his death was caused by the "abuse" of prescription drugs, which is telling.

"When they use the term abuse it tells us that he used drugs to obtain an intoxicant effect and not for a therapeutic reason. They must have determined through their investigation that the drugs were not for therapeutic use."

The actor, 28, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Jan. 22. Authorities said at the time that they did not suspect foul play but that medication was found near the body. (Six medications, including anti-anxiety medications and sleeping pills, were found near the body.)

Spears released from UCLA hospital

The pop singer had been a patient in the psychiatric ward since last week.

Pop singer Britney Spears was released from a psychiatric ward at the UCLA Medical Center today after nearly a week of treatment.

It was unclear where she was going, but sources said she might head to one of her homes before seeking additional treatment.

Unlike the spectacle surrounding her trip to the Westwood medical facility last week, she slipped out with relatively little fanfare. A private security detail escorted her in contrast to last week when more than a dozen Los Angeles police officers escorted Spears to the hospital via motorcade.
he LAPD said they took that step after increasingly aggressive tactics by paparazzi have forced them to take costly precautions. Authorities said she was headed home before seeking additional treatments.

Her release comes after Spears' mother, in court documents, said her daughter's self-described friend and manager exerted near-total control over the singer, cutting her phone lines, taking away her cellphone chargers, disabling her vehicles and grinding up pills to place in her food. Spears' mother alleges in a restraining order against the man.

Spears' mother made the allegations in a request for a restraining order against the manager, Sam Lutfi. The restraining order, approved Friday and released by the court Tuesday, bars Lutfi from coming within 250 yards of the singer.

Spears' father and an attorney have been granted temporary conservatorship over Spears and her estate. According to sources, a grand theft report was filed by Spears' father, Jamie Spears, after the singer was taken to the UCLA hospital last week.

The grand theft report alleges that paintings, jewelry and other valuables were taken from his daughter's Coldwater Canyon home. A limited number of people had access to the home in that period, sources said.

"way to soon for her to be out, i just hope she has the same suppport outside the facility this time, best of luck Britney."

The rumors are true, confirmed by no less a source than her father: Jennifer Lopez is expecting twins.

And it isn't even a Lopez family first.

"Yes, twins," her dad David Lopez said in an interview on the Spanish-language show Escándalo TV, PEOPLE en Español reports. "The thing is in my family, my sister also had twins, so it's a hereditary thing."

For David Lopez, the news means double the excitement.

"I'm very proud. Jennifer has yearned to be a mother for many years," he said.

And he already has gifts ready for his 38-year-old daughter's babies.

"In Puerto Rico it's custom to buy an azabache [black stone] bracelet for babies to protect them from the evil eye, it's part of our culture," he said.

As she became noticeably pregnant, J-Lo finally announced last November that she and Marc Anthony were expecting.

"Congrats J.Lo cant wait to see the baby pics."

Josh Kelley's latest smash hit wasn't one the singer had planned.

Kelley and new wife Katherine Heigl found their SUV was the target of an overnight break-in.

The car, which was parked outside the couple's Hollywood Hills home, had a demolished driver's side window and was missing only the GPS device, according to a video clip posted on TMZ.com. Kelley can be heard saying, "Thieves suck."

While a smoking Heigl moves their other SUV into the garage, Kelley removes two guitars – miraculously untouched – from the backseat of the burglarized vehicle, amazed at the luck.

"He may get lost next time he drives, but least the crooner can still serenade his new bride!"
